-High Admiral Falran Luren-

The briefing went quickly. Falran couldn’t decide if it was Peter’s uncomfortable memories or Talesta’s frustration that made it so. Peter dismissed himself and disappeared into the corridor. Sedri remained in his seat for a few moments, his eyes drooping. “Get some rest, Sedri. We’ll go over the specifications in the morning.” They’d purposely left the major details out of the briefing for Peter’s benefit. The less he knew of the reality, the safer he would be with the inevitable backlash.

He slowly rose to his feet and nodded to them both. “Avus, Gran.” With a quick salute, he left them.

Talesta waved to the guards outside and asked if any of them needed anything. She always had more concern for the wellbeing of her men than most of her male counterparts did. Her fatigue setting in, Talesta sat across from him once more.

“So that's why you didn’t elaborate before.” Talesta blew air through her teeth. “The Crown Prince! Here on the Effette.” She raised an eyebrow as she scrunched her nose. “That does complicate things now, doesn’t it?”

Falran nodded. Greatly. She’d met Prince Garin frequently. But as her tone suggested, even she knew it was rare for him to leave the Denuitian court.

“What’s bothering you, Father? You’ve barely made a joke all evening.”

Falran considered not telling her about her brother’s communication. He could discount the behavior on the reminiscing about his friendship with Admiral Kindry. She would believe it. They were the best of friends. She knew better than most how hard the loss hit him. The two of them mourned for their losses frequently. But that shared loss was lifted ever so slightly since Etan’s return. He wasn’t the same man who she’d lost to that battle and she was not the vibrant risk taker she once was. Granted, she had far more calculations in her actions, but she still made risky decisions. “I don’t want to worry you, Talesta. Not in your condition. At your age, you should really be less concerned about the worries of others.”

“I am an Admiral, Father! My job requires a great deal of responsibility for the concerns of others. And at my age?” His daughter scrunched her nose as she would in her youth. “Need I remind you of mother’s age? Sebastian is a year older than Jenna, Father.” Talesta stood up and rested her hands on her stomach. At six months, she looked as if she was nearly full term. Talesta had inherited her mother’s height and was almost six inches shorter than her father. “I may be six months pregnant, but that doesn’t mean I am incapable of seeing right through you.”

“You’re right.” He gestured for her to sit again. “But expectant mothers still need to rest, regardless of their age.” And as your father, I worry. Hiding the words and the internal cringe from her became far more difficult with each passing year. “How is Etan doing?”

Talesta turned her head from the door to him. “You could have asked him that yourself.
